The Methuen Cup is the oldest Military Team Shooting Competition in the world. It was first fired in 1894 between HMS Excellent, The Royal Marine Artillery and the School of Musketry. Since 1900 it has been administered by the Army Rifle Association (ARA).
It was named after Field Marshall Methuen who realised the importance of rifle shooting during the Boer War, when as GOC Home District he presided over the 1895 meeting, by which time there were six teams. Soon after there were 34 teams from throughout the Armed Services entitled to enter.
Over the years since, many teams from the Commonwealth, USA, Oman and finally Civilians have joined. As civilians we only shoot against other civilians for the Mauser (Open Class) and Mons (Historic Class) trophies.
Though much reduced from its heyday, it is still a grand day in the old style.
